In an alternate dimension, Classic Sonic is running through the Green Hill until he hears a noise and senses a brief earthquake, though he ignores it. Teaming up with a younger version of himself, Sonic explores White Space to save his friends, defeat the Time Eater and return home. In Sonic Generations, Sonic celebrates his birthday party with his friends, only for them to be captured by the Time Eater and left trapped in White Space. In April 2018, the Xbox 360 version of the game was made backwards compatible with the Xbox One and supports Xbox One X enhanced features. The PlayStation 3 version was available to be streamed on the PlayStation 4 and PC via the PS Now subscription service, with PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Sony Bravia Smart TV (2013, 2014, 20 models), Sony Blu-Ray players and Samsung Smart TV support for the service being dropped in 2017.
All versions of this game can be played in stereoscopic 3D, but a 3DTV as well as a pair of 3D glasses are required for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions, being the first game of the franchise to support stereoscopic 3D.
While the game came out in home consoles and PC, an alternate version of the game was also released by Dimps for the Nintendo 3DS. Also, bosses have been teleported to other levels for challenges. In particular, special stages have all their rings completely removed from the game and checkpoints no longer teleport you to a Bonus Stage. Some levels have been slightly altered for these challenges.
If the timre reaches 0:00, the player’s character instantly dies and is teleported back to the Challenge Select Screen regardless of how many lives were held or the time remaining at the last passed checkpoint. Timer functions as a countdown as time goes backwards in every challenge. Upon completion, they recieve a Rank based on the amount of time remaining and the achieved score, which depends on the content of that challenge. In each challenge, players must accomplish a certain goal using a specific character and reach the end of the level, within the given time limit. On the main screen, players are provided a screen resembling a level select screen, containing 12 categories of challenges to complete.
